The Learning Orchestra

We had a great time today with the lovely young children who came to The Learning Orchestra, the special event the passionate teachers at Winners Education organised for them. Each group played games, sung, drew, danced and ....learned the colours! Each set of activities was designed to help our young friends discover their talents and learning style. We focused on visual, auditory and kineasthetic activities and we all enjoyed the event even more because learning is so easy and fun when you learn in your own unique way!!! 

Περάσαμε τέλεια σήμερα με τα γλυκύτατα παιδιά που ήρθαν στην Βιωματική Ημερίδα που ετοίμασαν οι παθιασμένοι εκπαιδευτικοί της Winners Education! Η κάθε ομάδα έπαιξε παιχνίδια, τραγούδησε, χόρεψε, ζωγράφισε ... και έτσι βιωματικά τα παιδιά έμαθαν τα χρώματα!!!!

Κάθε ομάδα δραστηριοτήτων ήταν ειδικά σχεδιασμένη να βοηθήσει τους μικρούς μας φίλους να ανακαλύψουν τα ταλέντα τους και τον μοναδικό μαθησιακό τους τύπο! Συνδυάσαμε οπτικές, ακουστικές και κιναισθητκές δραστηριότητες. Απολαύσαμε όλοι τόσο την Ημερίδα γιατί το να μαθαίνεις είναι τόσο εύκολο και διασκεδαστικό όταν μαθαίνεις με τον μοναδικά δικό σου τρόπο!

Technology - A bonds breaker or a connections creator?

The issue on the use of technology in the classroom is quite recurrent in teachers' conversations. Actually, I was  recently asked to contribute an article to the TESOL Greece blog on the issue. No argument however can be as persuasive as the account of my summer this year!
Το ζήτημα σχετικά με τη χρήση της τεχνολογίας στην τάξη είναι αρκετά επαναλαμβανόμενo σε συζητήσεις εκπαιδευτικών. Πρόσφατα μάλιστα μου ζητήθηκε να συνεισφέρω ένα άρθρο στο blog της TESOL Ελλάδας σχετικά με το θέμα. Κανένα επιχείρημα όμως δεν μπορεί να είναι τόσο πειστικό όσο η ιστορία του φετινού μου καλοκαιριού!

In 2012 our B1 level class had a skype meeting with a class of Hispanic teens from Maimi, USA who were also studyng ESL. Their teacher, Pamela Llorens, was very eager to help her students develop an awareness for other cultures. We both saw the benefits of students exchanging experiences on their English language learning so we chose the subject of food and took it fom there. Both classes made videos and online presentations on their country's traditional cuisine. Pam even bought a Greek tsoureki for her students and so did we. Then we met online to discuss each other's videos, share eating the sweet bread and explain how it can be enjoyed similarly to scones.
Πέρυσι η B1 τάξη μας συναντήθηκε στο skype με μια τάξη ισπανόφωνων εφήβων από το Maimi οι οποίοι επίσης μαθαίνουν αγγλικά σαν δεύτερη γλώσσα. Η καθηγήτρια τους, Pamela Llorens, ήταν πολύ πρόθυμη να βοηθήσει τους μαθητές της να αναπτύξουν συνείδηση ​​για τους άλλους πολιτισμούς. Και οι δύο είδαμε τα οφέλη της ανταλλαγής εμπειριών σχετικά με την εκμάθηση της αγγλικής γλώσσας. Έτσι  επιλέξαμε το θέμα της διατροφής. Και οι δύο τάξεις έφτιαξαν βίντεο και online παρουσιάσεις σχετικά με παραδοσιακή κουζίνα της χώρας τους. Η Pam αγόρασε ακόμη και ένα ελληνικό τσουρέκι για τους μαθητές της και το ίδιο κάναμε κι εμείς!  Στη συνέχεια συναντήθηκαμε σε απευθείας σύνδεση για να συζητήσουμε τα βίντεο, να μοιραστούμε το γλυκό ψωμί και να εξηγήσουμε πώς μπορούν να το απολαμβάνουν.

The classes kept meeting discussing  different subjects until Pam, hooked on Greek culture and cuisine, decided to take my invitation and come to Greece to teach in our summer classes and spend an unforgetable month in Athens and Crete!

Οι συναντήσεις συνεχίστηκαν μέχρι που η Pam, ενθουσιασμένη με τον ελληνικό πολιτισμό και την κουζίνα, αποφάσισε να πάρει την πρόσκλησή μου και να έρθει στην Ελλάδα για να διδάξει στις τάξεις μας το καλοκαίρι και να περάσετε έναν αξέχαστο μήνα στην Αθήνα και την Κρήτη!

All Winners Education's classes blog but quad-blogging was a different experience, much more interactive, fun and with the added benefits of international collaboration. As a result, we paired with 3 other classes from around the world to let our students reap the benefits. Anne Mirchin, a very active international collaborator who teaches in a rural school in Australia was one of the four educators.  The classes kept regularly  in touch and so did the teachers. What a surprise to hear that Anne's son, who lives in London, was going to get married in Cyprus and that Anne and her family had decided to visit Crete after the wedding!  We got to drink tsikoudia together at Hania Old port!

Όλα τα τμήματα της Winners Education έχουν blog, αλλά το quad-blogging ήταν μια διαφορετική εμπειρία, πολύ πιο διαδραστική, διασκεδαστική και με τα πρόσθετα πλεονεκτήματα της διεθνούς συνεργασίας που θέλαμε μαθητές μας να επωφεληθούν. Ως αποτέλεσμα, έχουμε συνδεθεί με 3 άλλα σχολεία από όλο τον κόσμο για να απολαύσουν οι μαθητές μας τα οφέλη  Η Anne Mirchin, μια πολύ ενεργή εκπαιδευτικός η οποία διδάσκει σε ένα αγροτικό σχολείο στην Αυστραλία ήταν μια από τις τέσσερις.  Οι τάξεις κρατήθηκαν τακτικά σε επαφή και το ίδιο έκαναν και οι δάσκαλοι. Τι έκπληξη να ακούσω ότι ο γιος της Άννας, ο οποίος ζει στο Λονδίνο, επρόκειτο να παντρευτεί στην Κύπρο και η Anne και η οικογένειά της είχαν αποφασίσει να επισκεφθούν την Κρήτη μετά το γάμο! 

Ήπιαμε τσικουδιά μαζί στο παλιό λιμάνι στα Χανιά!

We live in an international community! Personal relations can be created online. Our children need to be accustomed to this culture and learn to use technology and the internet in a beneficial way if they are to prosper in the future that is already here!  It is our responsibility as teachers to lead by eaxmple opening our classes' windows to the world!

Ζούμε σε μια διεθνή κοινότητα! Οι προσωπικές σχέσεις μπορεί να δημιουργηθούν και σε απευθείας σύνδεση! Τα παιδιά μας θα πρέπει να συνηθίσουν σε αυτή την κουλτούρα και να μάθουν να χρησιμοποιούν την τεχνολογία και το διαδίκτυο με επωφελή τρόπο για να μπορέσουν να ευημερήσουν στο μέλλον που είναι ήδη εδώ! Είναι ευθύνη μας, ως εκπαιδευτικών να δώσουμε το παράδειγμα ανοίγοντας το παράθυρο της τάξης μας στον κόσμο!

Aristocracy Award Ceremony

Results decide the method and in 2012-13 our unique method proved itself. More of our students excelled! Aristocracy, our excellence competition rewarded the effort of everyone who took part with scolarships and many more gifts! Mrs Pamela Liorens, an American educator and member of the international group of schools and educators our school belongs to, presented everyone with their awards and talked about the best way to learn a foreign language. Her speech was translated by the students of the Express B2 class.

Η μέθοδος αποδυκνείεται από το αποτέλεσμα και το 2012-13 το σχολείο μας είχε το υψηλότερο ποσοστό αριστούχων! Ο Διαγωνισμός Αριστείας Aristocracy επιβράβευσε τους αριστούχους μας και όλους τους συμμετέχοντες με υποτροφίες και άλλα σημαντικά δώρα!
Την απονομή έκανε η Αμερικανίδα εκπαιδευτικός Pamela Llorens, μέλος του παγκόσμιου δικτύου σχολείων και εκπαιδευτικών οπου ανήκει η Winners Education. Οι μαθητές του τμήματος B2 Social responsibilitry μετέφρασαν τον λόγο της!

As part of our Creative Way, Winners Education students put up a  set of plays  every summer. 

This year we decided to become much more ambitious, putting up the reknown musical Mama Mia!

Σαν μέρος της Δημιουργικης Μεθόδου μας, οι μαθητές της Winners Education ανεβάζουν παραστάσεις κάθε καλοκαίρι. Εφέτος αποφασίσαμε να ανεβάσουμε μια πολύ πιο φιλόδοξη παράσταση, το πασίγνωστο musical Mama Mia!

The whole school is involved in this wonderful, creative adventure!

The performance director,Miss Christine, along with a commitee of  teachers auditioned  candidates for the main roles and  "actors" from among the students were given the roles that best suit their personality. Other students, who love dance, took on creating the choreographies for the songs which will be performed by different classes, while others still are in charge of the organisation and scenery. 

Όλο το σχολείο συμμετέχει σ' αυτήν την υπέροχη, δημιουργική περιπέτεια!

Η έμπειρη σκηνοθέτις μας, κυρία Χριστίνα, έκανε οντισιόν με όλους τους υποψήφιους μαθητές για τους κύριους ρόλους και οι "ηθοποιοί" επιλέχθηκαν σύμφωνα ε τον ρόλο που τους ταιριάζει καλύτερα. Άλλοι μαθητές, έξοχοι χορευτές και χορεύτριες, ανέλαβαν τις χορογραφίες για ΄λοες τις τάξεις, ενώ άλλοι μαθητές ανέλαβαν την οργάνωση και τα σκηνικά.

Rehearsals started early on in April and every afternoon the neighbourhood resonates with the catchy Abba music and the students recitig their roles. 

Οι πρόβες άρχισαν νωρίς-νωρίς τον Απρίλη και κάθε απόγευμα η γειτονιά ξεσηκώνεται από τα υπέροχα τραγούδια των Abba και τα γέλια των μαθητών που προβάρουν τους ρόλους τους!

You are all welcome to the great day June 17th, 8.30pm at Palataki. It's really going to be a lot of of FUN!
